East Texas Women Produces Self Defense DVD

Recent attacks of women in East Texas stress the need for training

LUFKIN – February 8, 2008 – East Texas Jujitsu Instructor Gabriella Roberts has finished production on a women’s self defense DVD, The Art of Survival. The 40 minute DVD is designed to teach women the basics in defense, from techniques from getting loose from assailant to defensive measures while captive. The DVD was shot during a group seminar with examples of attacks in various situations.

”My heart is for women to watch this DVD, practice the fundamentals and gain confidence to fight off an attack.” says Roberts.  “This idea came from my volunteering at the Women’s shelter in Nacogdoches and realizing that every woman needed to learn and practice these elementary tactics.”

Roberts has been studying self defense since 1994 and attained in 1997 the level of black belt second degree, registered with the International Ju-Jitsu Federation. Along with Mushin Budo, Ju-Jitsu, she has studied other disciplines including Aikido, Teppo Jutsu and is certified in Acupressure.  She has recently begun taking private instruction students and will add classes for groups and organizations by request.

“Although earning belts in Ju-Jitsu are fulfilling, they are just belts” reminds Roberts. “I tell my students to practice, practice and practice even more.  These techniques need to be second nature.”

Ju-jitsu (or Yawara) is an ancient Japanese Martial Art. Its origins date back to the sixteenth century when legend narrates that its founding father, a young Japanese man called Shirobei Akiyama who was studying medicine in China, witnessed a heavy blizzard. He was able to appreciate how branches of most trees broke while the elastic branches of the Willow tree bent and efficiently freed themselves from the snow.

Although the martial arts originated with eastern philosophies and religions, Roberts teaches from a Christian prospective and weaves encouraging scripture from the Bible throughout the DVD.

A new website has been set up at www.AttackSurvival.com with more information about group classes, private instruction and to facilitate DVD orders.  The DVD can also be purchased at MSGPR, 1511 S Chestnut in Lufkin.
